Obama is Casting Actors for Town Hall Audience per Nielsen’s ‘Back Stage’

Friday, October 8, 2010

What are you doing, October 14th?  Would you like to be a  “town hall meeting” shill for Barack Obama?  According to this official casting notice in Nielsen’s Back Stage site, you still have time to apply and/or audition.

Here is the link to the live listing in the Back Stage casting call.

Here are elements of screen shots of this notice, taken betwen the hours of 1:00 and 2:00 am CT, today (10/8).  We will pan out, as we go.  You should be able to click twice, to enlarge the wider (and condensed) shots.

And bigger yet, to see the page’s header:

After the last one he had, who could be surprised that they have decided to be more careful, for the next?

Not much need be reported, the pictures being worth their 1K words.  It checks out, according to investigators clicking in.

However, we will update at this page, in a few minutes.  Perhaps they have specified the kinds of acting criteria they need required: roles played in the past, live audience, etc.

Update, 4:51 am CT:

For background, we see on their “About Us” page, that “For nearly 50 years, Back Stage has been the most trusted place for actors to find performing arts and casting information.”  Nothing but the best for the U.S. Presidency, after all.

And as for the talent a president may tap, “Back Stage is a place where actors, singers and dancers can connect with the greater performing arts community.”  It is appropriate that our Commander in Chief is considered part of the “greater” and not, say, any lesser performing arts community — American exceptionalism after all, Obama style.

Nielsen takes pains to point out their own exceptional attention to screening those who place such casting notices: “Actors are, unfortunately, highly vulnerable to all kinds of sleazy operators and scam artists. Back Stage takes particular pride in trying to prevent that.”  Well, not even Nielsen is perfect.  But they go on to explain:

We offer every actor our unique Back Stage Casting Pledge: We check out all casting notices before we publish them.

We never simply publish a casting notice as submitted. We ask questions, check references, and refuse to publish calls that seem less than reputable. No other publication takes the steps we do to protect actors.

For instance, we ask production companies to indicate if roles are paid or not; if any roles require nudity; are they seeking union or nonunion actors (and if it’s union, under which contract); and so forth…

No mention of nudity is to be seen in the Obama casting call, thankfully.  However (and this may be very difficult to accept, among his chief supporters) no union scale will be paid.

And, still noting the “About Us” page, we have the following warning to taxpaying American Citizens: “You should never go into an audition wondering if the person behind that door will try to take your money — or worse.”  Thank you, Back Stage, but it is too late for that to be a mystery.

All this being the case, they conclude with with the following confession: “Despite our best efforts, con artists and creeps occasionally fool us.”

And so must many voters in the 2008 Election concur.

FBI busted tracking student, demands GPS spy gear return

By Wilson Rothman

Several days ago a 20-year-old student discovered a GPS tracking device hidden on his car. After his friend posted a picture of it online, speculating about its ties to a secret FBI investigation, the feds themselves came a-knockin’, according to Wired.com. They wanted their toy back.

Based on the discussion with the six FBI agents who arrived at his doorstep, Yassir Afifi believes he’d been under surveillance for three to six months. When Wired asked an FBI spokesman about the case, he did not acknowledge ownership of the device, but said that there was an “ongoing investigation.”

Afifi says that he cooperated with the FBI and, according to Wired, “did nothing to merit attention from authorities.” He is a U.S. citizen who lives in Santa Clara, Calif., where he attends Mission College.

Afifi’s father, an Islamic-American activist, died a year ago in Egypt. It is not clear what the circumstances of his death were, or if this was the reason for the FBI’s investigation of Afifi.

The gadget itself — a GPS receiver identified as a police-issue-only Cobham Orion Guardian ST820 tracking system, connected to a battery pack and radio transmitter — was magnetically attached to the car. A shot of it made its way around the blogosphere on Monday, after appearing on the community news site Reddit. After Afifi spotted an antenna sticking out during an oil change, the garage owner offered to yank it out. It apparently popped off quite easily.

The question of whether or not sticking a GPS on a car is legal is actually in the middle of a hot debate right now. One federal court recently said that it was legal, while another said that tracking for an “extended period of time” would in fact require a warrant. (For more on this, here’s a great piece in Time written by lawyer and tech journalist Adam Cohen.)

Legality aside, the tactic itself might have been carried out with something less than precision. Simply put, tracking devices shouldn’t be so easy to find. Wired talked to an agent who said that not only is the tracking device out of date, but state-of-the-art snoops hardwire the stuff directly to the car’s electrical system, avoiding the need for a battery.

What’s impressive is how quickly Afifi got an identification of the gadget by crowdsourcing it on the Web. On the flipside, that kind of exposure isn’t good PR for the FBI. Surely the revelation of the magnetic tracker will cause many people to check under their own cars. Like many noble efforts to keep us safe from terrorism, this one may be turning out to not be so effective. After all, those who already know they’re involved in illegal activity probably check their cars every day, rain or shine.

For more details on the Afifi story, read the report at Wired.com.

PHOTO: Pre-Chicken Nugget Meat Paste, AKA Mechanically Separated Poultry [Updated]

Mechanically Separated Chicken, from Fooducate, via Early Onset of Night
The photo above has been extensively passed around recently, and for good reason: it’s a peek into the rarely-seen world of mechanically separated meat.

Fooducate writes:

Someone figured out in the 1960s that meat processors can eek out a few more percent of profit from chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows by scraping the bones 100% clean of meat. This is done by machines, not humans, by passing bones leftover after the initial cutting through a high pressure sieve. The paste you see in the picture above is the result.

Michael Kindt continues:

There’s more: because it’s crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia… Then, because it tastes gross, it will be reflavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color.
But, hey, at least it tastes good, right?

High five, America!

The resulting paste goes on to become the main ingredient in many of America’s favorite mass-produced and processed meat-like foods and snacks: bologna, hot dogs, salami, pepperoni, Slim Jim-like jerkys, and of course the ever-polarizing chicken nugget, where the paste from the photo above was likely destined. See more…

Sarkozy orders French police to make a scene, sends his security goons onto the streets following fake US terror warnings
Pakistani diplomat launches scathing attack on White House

European intelligence claims raised terror alerts ‘nonsensical’

A US terror alert issued this week about al-Qaida plots to attack targets in western Europe was politically motivated and not based on credible new information, senior Pakistani diplomats and European intelligence officials have told the Guardian.

The non-specific US warning, which despite its vagueness led Britain, France and other countries to raise their overseas terror alert levels, was an attempt to justify a recent escalation in US drone and helicopter attacks inside Pakistan that have “set the country on fire”, said Wajid Shamsul Hasan, the high commissioner to Britain.

Hasan, a veteran diplomat who is close to Pakistan’s president, suggested the Obama administration was playing politics with the terror threat before next month’s mid-term congressional elections, in which the Republicans are expected to make big gains.

He also claimed President Obama was reacting to pressure to demonstrate that his Afghan war strategy and this year’s troop surge, which are unpopular with the American public, were necessary.

“I will not deny the fact that there may be internal political dynamics, including the forthcoming mid-term American elections. If the Americans have definite information about terrorists and al-Qaida people, we should be provided [with] that and we could go after them ourselves,” Hasan said.

“Such reports are a mixture of frustrations, ineptitude and lack of appreciation of ground realities. Any attempt to infringe the sovereignty of Pakistan would not bring about stability in Afghanistan, which is presumably the primary objective of the American and Nato forces.”

Dismissing claims of a developed, co-ordinated plot aimed at Britain, France and Germany, European intelligence officials also pointed the finger at the US, and specifically at the White House. “To stitch together [the terror plot claims] in a seamless narrative is nonsensical,” said one well-placed official.
