Maya Plisetskaya about dance (Russian) – an interview.

.

=============================

From my experience. All audiences are good if you perform well.

I feel it when I am taking the audience, and I take them by giving them something. Sometimes I can not understand, what it is specifically. But I feel, that something is coming from me. I force the audience to be attentive, then to hold their breath, then I have great success.

This means I have performed well. And this concerns any audience, because all people are the same. People perceive both life and art equally: it either touches the soul or not. And nothing else!

That’s why I don’t like to dance ‘about nothing’. Just ‘dance about nothing’. Then it is ‘about nothing’ in your soul as well. And what all this is for?..

Recently some people very often show us: look, this is – ‘ modern dance ‘, you probably don’t understand. A person thinks – probably I am stupid, because I don’t understand. They don’t believe themselves. This is wrong! Believe yourself, believe, if something makes an impression on you – that means it is good. If it makes no impression – it is NOT good.

It happened to me once in India when I danced The Dying Swan by Saint-Saens, and nobody asked me what this dance was about. Then I danced pas de deux from ‘Don Quichote’ – with tricks, with fuettes. All Indians were asking me: what was this all about? I don’t know either. About 32 fuettes. And this doesn’t touch you. One can make 100 fuettes – and it won’t touch your soul. Ah-oh, tricks – how great! In this case you need to go to the circus – they do tricks 100 times better. Or gymnastics – a free routine. They would do anything – tie themselves into a bungle. How difficult it is to perform on a balance beam, it is frightful to watch. We see great SKILL, but not art.

The Sema Ceremony commemorates the passing of Hz. Mevlana Jelaluddin RUMI, known in the west as a 13th-century mystic poet. He also founded the Mevlevi Sufi Order, still active worldwide 733 years after his passing from this world.

This clip shows Whirling Dervishes of the Mevlevi Order of America in the Sema Ceremony in Istanbul, December 2005. We presented the Sema Ceremony in Eugene, Seattle and Portland December 2006, and will present Sema in Honolulu, Maui, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in December 2007.
